One wallet for both doors
Entry to either casino, gaming floor included, is limited to guests aged 19 and over. At the door, valid government photo ID is required: a passport, a driver's licence or an ID card issued by the province. Anyone who appears under 30 can be asked for a second item, such as another government photo ID, a provincial health card, or a credit or debit card. The Halifax theatre is also 19+.
One Player's Club card works at both ends of the road. Joining costs nothing: a guest aged 19 or older shows government photo ID and fills in a short form.

The road in one line
The road line leaves the Halifax casino through Dartmouth on Highway 118 and joins Highway 102 north to Truro. From there Highway 104, the Trans-Canada, runs east past New Glasgow and Antigonish. It crosses the Canso Causeway and stays on Highway 104 across Cape Breton Island. Highway 4 then follows East Bay into Sydney. This is one way to make the drive, not the only one.
As the crow flies, the two casinos sit 312 km apart. Every distance on these pages is measured between two map points. Roads run longer than straight lines, so the guide prints no driving times.
The drive in five stages
Halifax to Truro
The line runs through Dartmouth on Highway 118, then takes Highway 102 north past Fall River and Stewiacke. Truro sits 82 km from the Halifax casino and 255 km from the Sydney casino as the crow flies.
Truro to New Glasgow
Highway 104, the Trans-Canada, heads east past Westville. As the crow flies, New Glasgow lies 127 km from the Halifax casino and 200 km from the Sydney one.

New Glasgow to Antigonish
Measured as the crow flies, Antigonish sits 165 km from the Halifax casino and 151 km from the Sydney casino, making it the first town on the line nearer to the Sydney casino than to the one in Halifax.
Antigonish to Port Hawkesbury
The Canso Causeway carries the road over the Strait of Canso onto Cape Breton Island. In a straight line the causeway is 202 km from the Halifax casino and 110 km from the Sydney one.
The island stretch
Highway 104 continues on Cape Breton Island, then Highway 4 follows East Bay past Sydney Forks and Sydney River. The line ends at the Sydney casino on George Street, 312 km from the Halifax casino as the crow flies.
Arriving at the Halifax end
In Halifax, the live tables on the main floor deal every day from 2 p.m. until 3 a.m. Blackjack, Roulette, Free Bet Blackjack and Ultimate Texas Hold'Em run there, with Let it Ride added on Fridays and Saturdays. Which games open and their minimums depend on how busy the floor is. The high-limit area keeps later hours, every day from 5 p.m. until 4 a.m. It deals Ultimate Texas Hold'Em, Ruyi Baccarat, Roulette and Blackjack at higher table limits.
Poker is dealt only at this end of the road, Wednesday through Saturday from 4 p.m. until 2 a.m. The Bruce Guthro Theatre is 19+ for every event. Slot floor hours are not published, and neither are holiday hours, so the casino line at 902-425-7777 is the way to check.
Pulling in on George Street
Halifax has nothing like the two Golfzon golf simulator bays in Sydney, Bay 1 and Bay 2, each holding up to 6 golfers. Tee times are available daily from 11 a.m. to 3 a.m., with 10 p.m. as the final time a booking is accepted. A bay can be reserved by calling 902-563-7703, as far as a month in advance.
As of April 2025 the floor held 280 slot machines, plus electronic tables for $3 Blackjack and $1 Roulette. There are no live table games and no poker room here. Celtic Junction Bar & Grille serves a full menu.

The online side of the province
Regulated online play in Nova Scotia is on alc.ca, which Atlantic Lottery runs for the Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation. Its online casino opened in July 2022, and Atlantic Lottery belongs to the governments of the four Atlantic provinces. In the words of Atlantic Lottery, no other online gambling site may legally run or advertise anywhere in Atlantic Canada. An overseas licence does not change that.
This guide's Ad links lead to a private online casino partner with no Nova Scotia licence or registration. Casino Nova Scotia self-exclusion and the alc.ca breaks and limits have no effect there. The partner pays this guide a commission, while links to the casinos, the province and help lines earn nothing.
Help on both sides of the causeway
- Calls to the Provincial Mental Health & Addictions Crisis Line, 1-888-429-8167, are free, private and answered around the clock.
- A Responsible Gambling Resource Centre sits in each casino: near Trapeze Restaurant in Halifax, 902-424-8663, and inside the Sydney entrance, 902-563-3797.
- Voluntary Self-Exclusion through Casino Nova Scotia covers both casinos, from the gaming floor to the restaurants and entertainment venues.
Before you set off
- How many kilometres separate the two casinos?
- As the crow flies, the Halifax casino and the Sydney casino are 312 km apart. Roads run longer than that line, and this guide gives no driving times.
- Where does the road cross onto Cape Breton Island?
- The road crosses at the Canso Causeway, over the Strait of Canso. Mulgrave sits near its mainland end and Port Hawkesbury near its island end.
- Does the Sydney end deal poker?
- Sydney has no poker room and no live table games. Live poker is dealt in Halifax, Wednesday through Saturday from 4 p.m. until 2 a.m.
- Will the Sydney golf desk take a 10:30 p.m. booking?
- Bookings close at 10 p.m., which puts a 10:30 p.m. slot past the cutoff. Every day, tee times run from 11 a.m. to 3 a.m. To reserve a bay, call 902-563-7703, as much as a month in advance.
- Is a separate Player's Club card needed for each end?
- One Player's Club card works in both casinos. Joining costs nothing for a guest aged 19 or older who shows government photo ID and fills in a short form. The card tier follows the points earned in the previous six months.
